Description

On behalf of Ascension Island, Pobjoy Mint is pleased to announce the release of an unmissable new series of coins commemorating the centenary of the outbreak of World War I.

One of the most defining events of the 20th century, ‘The Great War’ as it is often known, remains a shocking reminder of the horrors of warfare. Marking this incredible anniversary, Pobjoy Mint’s highly collectable coins have the title ‘We Will Remember Them’ and reflect the more poignant stories of World War I.  Each coin also features a Poppy as a symbol of remembrance – a tradition connected with WWI.

Featured here, this beautiful WW1 commemorative coin, in coloured Uncirculated Cupro Nickel, depicts a cemetery at the Somme dedicated to those who fell in ‘The War to End All Wars’.

Available in Uncirculated Cupro Nickel and Proof Sterling Silver, each precious metal coin has been carefully struck four times to create the famous Pobjoy Proof finish and features frosted high relief sculpting against a mirror brilliant background.  As an Act of Remembrance for this Centenary, the special edition coin has the poppy produced in full colour.

The obverse of the coin carries an effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS. Ian Rank-Broadley is one of the foremost sculptors working today. His effigy of H.M. Queen Elizabeth II has appeared on all UK coinage since 1998 and the Pobjoy Mint has exclusive use of the ‘uncouped’ effigy that appears on the obverse of these collector’s coins.

We will remember them

In June 1914, a Serbian nationalist assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria in Sarajevo.  An intensification of threats and deployment orders followed the incident which led to the outbreak of World War I.  By the time World War I ended, more than 9 million soldiers had been killed and 21 million wounded.

This remarkable coin, released in commemoration of the war, offers a fitting tribute to those who sacrificed their lives for the freedom of others. A limited edition, this coloured Uncirculated Cupro Nickel collector’s coin comes in a stunning presentation pouch.

Other coins available individually or as part of an incredible World War I Centenary series includes the depiction of the Allies of World War I and Germany signing the Armistice for the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front at Compiègne, France.
