Pobjoy Mint is delighted to announce the release of a superb new Uncirculated Cupro Nickel collector’s coin on behalf of Ascension Islands which features the Island’s new Coat of Arms.
August 2012 was a very special month for the Ascension Islanders when Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II approved a new Coat of Arms featuring important symbols from the Territory. Drawn up by the College of Arms in London, the Coat of Arms features a shield emblazoned with the Green Mountain that dominates the skyline, together with three Wideawake birds secured by two Green turtles that famously lay their eggs on the Ascension Island beaches. The Coat of Arms was created following extensive public consultation amongst the inhabitants of the island.
An Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom in the southern Atlantic Ocean, Ascension Island has been a British governed land since the 1800's. This isolated volcanic island is situated around 1,600km from the coast of Africa and 2,250 from the coast of South America. Its nearest neighbours are St Helena and Tristan da Cunha. Although there is no indigenous or permanent population on the island, around 880 people live there in the five settlements of Georgetown, Two Boats, Cat Hill, Traveller’s Hill and Wideaware Airfield.
Named after the day of its recorded discovery, Ascension Day (20th March), by Portuguese navigator Afonso de Albuquerque in 1503, the island has historically played a role as an important safe haven and coaling station to mariners. During World War II, Ascension Islands was an important naval and air station, and was garrisoned by the British Admiralty from 1815 to 1922. It was also used extensively during the Falklands War.
Available in Cupro Nickel and Proof Sterling Silver, the obverse of each coin carries an effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS. Ian Rank-Broadley is one of the foremost sculptors working today. His effigy of H.M. Queen Elizabeth II has appeared on all UK coinage since 1998 and the Pobjoy Mint has exclusive use of the ‘uncouped’ effigy that appears on the obverse of these coins.
Each commemorative coin is detailed to perfection and the precious metal coins have been struck four times to produce a glorious mirror finish background with the design sculpted in striking relief.
