History of Gold Coins
Gold, the most precious of metals used for coins, is found as nuggets or grains in rocks and alluvial deposits. It has been used as a method of currency since the second millennium BC when ingots cut up into different sized chunks were traded and in today's world its many uses span dentistry, electronics, jewellery and of course, gold coins.
The polished gold coins of today are about as far removed as possible, looks and quality-wise from the first ever gold coins, thought to have been minted way, way back in 670 BC by King Gyges of Lydia in Turkey. His coins were made of electrum, a natural alloy of gold and silver and it's said the source of his gold came about when legendary King Midas washed himself in a local river in a bid to rid himself of his renowned Midas touch. Needless to say, Pobjoy Mint has produced a range of coins made from Electrum as a gesture of recognition of the King who started the entire hobby of coin collecting.
Elsewhere in history Alexander the Great was reputed to have stolen 22 tons of gold coins from the Persians when he conquered their empire.
