Isle of Man 1990 Penny Black Coinsenlarge image
1990 celebrated the 150th Anniversary of the uniform Penny Postage and the Penny Black. The Isle of Man issued the first "Pearl Black" Crown in the World, whose reverse reproduces the world's first adhesive postage stamp.
Handstruck stamps, denoting the prepayment of postage, were invented in England in 1662, triangular devices being used by William Dockwra's London Penny Post. Adhesive stamps only became possible when Rowland Hill devised the system of Uniform Penny Postage which came into operations on January 10, 1840.
To make it easier for the public to post their letters out of post office hours, Rowland Hill invented the first Adhesive Stamp, the Penny Black, which was introduced on May 1 but did not actually become valid for postage till May 6.
The treasury held a nationwide competition in 1839 to obtain suitable designs, but the simple suggestion of using Queen Victoria's Profile by Rowland Hill himself was finally used.
It is therefore concluded that this most famous stamp was inspired by a medal and will now find commemoration in the first "Pearl Black" coin in the World. The reverse of the coin shows the stamp, Wyon's classic portrait of the teenage Queen Victoria which was so popular that it was retained for every British stamp until 1902. The inscription "150th Anniverary Penny Black Crown" is written around the perimeter of the coin.
To make this coin even more unique, the current Monarchy, Queen Elizabeth II is portrayed on the Obverse.
The Crown was launched in March of 1990 in Pearl Black Proof Cupro Nickel, Pearl Black Proof Sterling Silver and Proof Fine Gold. The CuNi coin is encapsulated in a special Penny Black folder with its Certificate of Authenticity.
Pear Black is a special technique employed by the Pobjoy Mint in order to create the beautiful Black colour and texture of the original Penny Black.
