100 years ago in 1909, Ernest Shackleton’s legendary Nimrod Expedition came within 97 miles of the South Pole. It was the greatest achievement to that date in the history of Antarctic Exploration. Shackleton returned to Britain as a national hero, and he was knighted by King Edward VII. Now, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands honour Shackleton’s amazing feat with a spectacular Centenary coin. The coin depicts Shackleton’s ship, Nimrod, with Shackleton, Marshall and Wild next to the Union Flag on the ice in front of the ship.
