Gold, the most precious of metals used for coins, is found as nuggets or grains in rocks and alluvial deposits. Gold has been used as a method of currency since the second millennium BC, when gold ingots cut up into different sized chunks were traded. In today's world the many uses of gold span dentistry and electronics, as well as the more uses in gold jewellery and, of course, gold coins.
The polished gold coins of today are about as far removed as possible, looks and quality-wise from the first ever gold coins, thought to have been minted way, way back in 670 BC by King Gyges of Lydia in Turkey. His coins were made of electrum, a natural alloy of gold and silver and it's said the source of his gold came about when legendary King Midas (the king cursed because everything he touched turned to gold) washed himself in a local river in a bid to rid himself of his renowned Midas touch.
