Diamonds might be a girl's best friend but silver is one of her most enduring relationships. Silver has been one of our favourite precious metals and used to make silver coins since the metal was first discovered around 4000BC in the silver mines of Anatolia (now known as Turkey). In the thousands of years that followed, first Greece and then Spain found and then exploited their vast slier deposits, but it was when the Americans were discovered in the 16th Century that silver mining really went into overdrive. Silver deposits in Mexico, Bolivia and Peru dwarfed the silver found in Europe and at one time three quarters of the world's silver came from these three areas. Today Mexico and Peru are still the biggest silver miners, with Australia's silver production coming close behind.
