British Virgin Islands 2009 Centenary of Naval Aviation Coin
enlarge imageSince 1909, the Royal Navy’s Fleet Air Arm has pioneered the use of aircraft from land and sea to defend and protect the United Kingdom and its overseas interests.
To commemorate the Centenary of Naval Aviation, the British Virgin Islands has issued a magnificent new coin featuring one of the Royal Navy’s most famous aircraft, the Fairey Swordfish, returning to the escort carrier HMS Fencer.
The Swordfish was critical in defending the convoys of the Battle of the Atlantic, and other famous actions such as the Battle of Taranto, the Channel Dash and the sinking of the Bismarck…
Also featured in the design is the official Fly Navy logo, which is used with the kind permission of the Fly Navy Heritage Trust, an educational organisation that exists to help preserve the Fleet Air Arm’s proud heritage.
