About the Gentoo Penguin:
The origins of the Gentoo Penguin's name is now unfortunately lost to time. Gentoo was an Anglo-Indian term to distinguish Hindus from Muslims, with the English term potentially originating from the Portuguese 'gentil'. However, despite the origins being unknown, the Gentoo Penguin is still easily recognisable by the wide white stripe that extends like a bonnet across the top of its head as well as its bright orange bill.
Gentoo Penguins have been known to make as many as 450 dives per day simply to forage for food. Their dives can reach as far as 200 meters (650 feet) and they can stay underwater for up to 7 minutes. Whilst they prefer to stay close to shore, some Gentoo Penguins have been spotted as far as 16 miles (26km) out to sea. These stunning birds are also the fastest-swimming penguins in the world, reaching speeds of up to 22.4mph (36kph).
Fun Facts about the Gentoo Penguin:
- Gentoo Penguins are the third-largest penguin species
- They will only breed in areas that are free of snow and ice
- Unlike other penguin species, Gentoo Penguins do not have a yearly migration cycle
- The Gentoo Penguin is the only Penguin population currently increasing in both size and domain
- Gentoo Penguins can live for around 15 to 20 years in the wild
