Bringing to life the legend of St. Patrick casting out serpents, this stunning new Proof Sterling Silver commemorative coin from Pobjoy Mint has been issued by the Isle of Man.
This wonderful IOM collector’s coin, issued in both proof sterling silver and uncirculated cupro nickel, clearly illustrates the good works of this saint whilst the obverse carries a fine effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Lord of Mann, by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS. Ian Rank-Broadley is one of the foremost sculptors working today. His effigy of H.M. Queen Elizabeth II has appeared on all UK coinage since 1998 and the Pobjoy Mint has exclusive use of the ‘uncouped’ effigy that appears on the obverse of these coins.
Bringing a legend to life
The Isle of Man does not have a patron saint, but if they were to adopt one, St. Patrick would be a strong contender, as he is credited with bringing Christianity to these shores. In the book ‘Christian Tradition in Mann, Mona Douglas wrote ‘Most people in this part of the world think of Christianity as coming from the East, but here in Man it came to use from the West, borne by the Irish Saints and first established upon a small rocky islet off the west coast of our land.’
It is said that St Patrick was returning from Liverpool to Ireland in AD444 with a band of 30 followers when he landed on the Isle of Eubonia (Isle of Man). Here ‘he found people, at least the rulers, given to magic. But being overcome or convinced by his preaching and miracles, they were converted or else expelled from the island.’ (Sacheverell’s survey of the Isle of Man, 1702).
Whether or not the legend is true, the Manx people have taken St. Patrick to their hearts and this coin pays a fitting tribute to this famous saint. The coin is available in Cupro Nickel and Proof Sterling Silver. Gold sizes are also available upon application.
The Pobjoy Mint’s famous quality is evident here – all coins are produced to the highest quality and the precious metal coins are struck four times to produce a glorious mirror finish background with the design sculpted in striking relief.
