Pobjoy Mint is excited to announce the release of a brand new 50p to mark the Bi-Centenary of Queen Victoria featuring the Royal British Coat of Arms of this well-loved monarch.

Queen Victoria was the Queen of the United Kingdom and Ireland from 20th June 1837 until her death on the 22nd January 1901. Her reign of 63 years and seven months was longer than that of any of her predecessors and was known as the Victorian Era.

To honour this well-loved monarch, our stunning new 50p has been produced in Silver Piedfort with an extremely low issue limit of only 500. The design features the official Coat of Arms of Queen Victoria. The value ‘50’ is shown at the base of the design and the obverse of the coin features the Pobjoy Mint Effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

The accession of Queen Victoria ended the personal union between the United Kingdom and Hanover, as Salic law prevented women from ascending the Hanoverian throne. The Escutcheon of Hanover was removed and the Royal Arms remained the same. There was no attempt to alter the royal Arms to reflect later titles acquired by the British monarch such as Emperor of India. The harp of the United Kingdom of Ireland remained despite the partition in 1921, to represent Northern Ireland.
