In 2002 the British Virgin Islands Government approved the release of a superb coin to commemorate the 425th Anniversary of the start of Sir Francis Drake’s Circumnavigation of the World. Due to the popularity of this coin, it is being released again this year with a 2004 date.
One of the greatest English sea captains of all time, Drake was born in Devonshire, England around 1540 and first took to the seas at the age of 12 or 13. He was to become a successful privateer and talented navigator and was chosen by Queen Elizabeth I to be the head of an expedition to sail around the world. On 13th December 1577, Drake began his expedition and set sail with three ships, one of which he later named the ‘Golden Hind’. In September 1580, the Golden Hind burdened with precious cargo, sailed into the port at Plymouth, England after three years of adventures around the world.
The coin itself depicts a portrait of Sir Francis Drake himself, his ship the Golden Hind and a chart of the British Virgin Islands. These quiet and peaceful islands are grouped around the Sir Francis Drake Channel, so it is most apt for this coin to carry Drake’s portrait.
The obverse of the coin carries an effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS FSNAD.
Available in Cupro Nickel and proof Sterling Silver, the precious metal versions have been struck four times to produce the magnificent proof finish for which Pobjoy Mint is renowned.
