Pobjoy Mint is delighted to release its latest coin of five in a truly spectacular Olympic Collection. Each coin depicts a specific continent, a famous landmark relating to a particular continent and a sporting event. In addition, each coin will be produced in a different colour of Titanium. The first coin was dated 2008 with the remaining four coins be dated 2009 completing the five coin Olympic Collection series. This remarkable collection has been produced on behalf of the British Virgin Islands Government.
Due to the difficulty of striking titanium, the metal is as strong as steel but 45% lighter, each coin in this series is truly exclusive as no two titanium coins are exactly the same. Each collector's coin also features a lined effect that is present as a result of the unmistakeable qualities of titanium.
The 2008 coin is produced in a dazzling Yellow Titanium representing the continent of Asia. The central image depicts two tennis players hitting a tennis ball over the Great Wall of China. In the foreground the Chinese symbol for lucky number eight appears on the left and a rat appears on the right, as 2008 is the Year of the Rat. At the top of the design the five stars from the flag of China appear next to an image of a dove symbolising the union of the Crown Victors of the Ancient Games.
The second coin has been produced in black Titanium representing the continent of Oceania. The central image depicts two swimmers in front of the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. In the foreground a kiwi, the national animal of New Zealand, appears on the left and a duck-billed platypus which is unique to Eastern Australia on the right. At the top of the design the five stars for the flag of Papua New Guinea appear next to a dove symbolising the union of the five continents.
The third coin has been produced in red Titanium representing the continent of the Americas. The central image depicts three hockey players skating around a totem pole in front of the Rocky Mountains. In the foreground a bald eagle, the national symbol of the U.S.A. appears on the left and a beaver, the national animal of Canada on the right. At the top of the design a maple leaf from the flag of Canada appears next to a dove, again symbolizing the union of the five continents.
The fourth coin has been produced in green Titanium representing the continent of Africa. The central image depicts two athletes running in front of Table Mountain, in the foreground a tribal mask appears on the left and a springbok, the national animal of South Africa on the right. At the top of the design the ‘Y’ shaped band from the flag of Republic of South Africa appears next to an image of a dove.
Finally, this, the fifth coin, has been produced in blue Titanium representing the continent of Europe. The central image depicts four rowers in front of the O2 Stadium in Greenwich, London. In the foreground a British bull dog appears on the left and a lion, the national animal of the United Kingdom on the right. At the top of the design the Union Jack and 12 stars from the European flag appear next to a dove which symbolizes the union of the five continents. Each coin displays a motif of a kotinos wreath in the surround of the design, which was used to crown victors of the Ancient Games.
The obverse of each coin bears a fine effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS FSNAD. The 2008 coin is now available in Yellow Titanium, Proof Bi-Metal Fine 999.9 Gold and Yellow Titanium and Proof Bi-Metal Fine 999. Silver and Yellow Titanium. The coins have been put through a special process which turns the Titanium a different colour. The precious metal versions of these coins have been struck four times to achieve the famous Pobjoy Proof finish.
