Pobjoy Mint is delighted to announce the release of a stunning new collector's coin on behalf of the British Virgin Islands Government (BVI) which shares with us the life of their native Coquí Tree Frog. This is the fourth combination coin of Silver and Crystal in the award-winning series from Pobjoy Mint.
This beautiful coin depicts this magical journey of the Tree Frog from egg to fully mature adult. This coin is also special in the fact that the middle is graced by a beautiful green coloured crystal, surrounded by Proof Sterling Silver. The contrast in colours makes the crystal stand out and the silver sparkle. On the crystal there is also a beautifully etched image of a Tree Frog.
Approved by Buckingham Palace the obverse of each coin carries a fine effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS at the top centre of the outer ring and is available in Proof Sterling Silver.
The Virgin Islands Coquí (Eleutherodactylus schwartzi) is a species of Frog found in British Virgin Islands and is an endangered species. Also known as a Bo-Peep Tree Frog, this little amphibian is renowned for its loud vocal call. Greyish in colour, they are a very small frog, with adults reaching about 41mm in size. Unlike many frogs, Coquís do not have a membrane between their toes and so are not adapted to swim. They do, however, possess padded toes like other Tree Frogs, which allow them to stick to damp surfaces such as branches and leaves. The usual habitat for the Coquí is subtropical or tropical dry forests.
Coquí Frogs breed in the wet season and the females lay between 16 and 40 eggs on palm tree leaves and other plants. The males protect the eggs from predators and the gestation period lasts from 17-26 days. The maturation period from egg to adult is around eight months. Males begin their mating call by perching above ground level. The name of the frog derives from the sound of the call – a noise that sounds like ‘Coquí’.
