Description

1914 saw the completion of the Panama Canal, an incredible waterway ultimately inspired by President Roosevelt. To celebrate the Centenary of this marvel of modern engineering, the British Virgin Islands Government has approved the release of a new proof sterling silver collector's coin from Pobjoy Mint which features the Panama Canal.

The Panama Canal is a ship canal that connects the Atlantic Ocean (via the Caribbean Sea) to the Pacific Ocean and once completed, ships no longer had to make the long and dangerous trip around South America. At 77.1 kilometres / 48 miles in length, the canal is a key channel for international maritime trade.  There are locks at each end to lift ships up to Gatun Lake, an artificial lake which was created to reduce the amount of excavation work that would have been required as the canal is 26 metres/85 feet above sea level.  The approximate time to travel the length of the canal is between 20 and 30 hours.

Whilst the early European colonists recognised the potential of the creation of a water passage between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans it was France who originally began work on the canal in 1881. Difficulties and engineering problems ensued which eventually led to the French having to stop work. The United States then took over the project in 1904 and took a decade to complete the canal which was officially opened on 15th August 1914.  One of the largest and most difficult engineering projects ever undertaken, annual traffic has risen from 1,000 ships when the canal first opened to nearly 15,000 vessels currently using it.
