The 25th Anniversary of the Liberation of the Falkland Islands was celebrated on 14th June 2007 and to mark this significant historical event, Pobjoy Mint are proud to announce the release of the first ever circulating coin, produced on behalf of the Government of the Falkland Islands.
This collector's coin designed to commemorate the Liberation is a 50 pence piece depicting a magnified map of the Falkland Islands in the background with a back view of a ‘Yomper’ in the centre. The marching figure is seen carrying a rucksack on his back with a Union Flag. Approved by Buckingham Palace the obverse of the coin bears a fine couped effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS FSNAD.
This commemorative coin is produced to the highest quality and is available in Uncirculated Cupro Nickel and Proof Sterling Silver. Each beautifully engineered precious metal coin has been struck four times to create the Pobjoy proof finish, resulting in a stunning mirror-finish background with the design sculpted in striking relief.

The long running dispute between Britain and Argentina over the ownership of the Falkland Islands was brought to a head on the 19th March 1982 when 50 Argentines landed and hoisted their flag. Under the order of Galtieri, President of Argentina, the invasion of the Falkland Islands was declared on 2nd April which triggered the start of the War.
The British Government then lead by Margaret Thatcher responded to this attack by sending a large task force to recapture the Islands, including a member of the British Royal Family, Prince Andrew, who personally fought in the Falklands. The Campaign launched by Margaret Thatcher, which probably initiated her nickname of the ‘Iron Lady’, was one of the most memorable events in post-war British History, in which British Forces operated 8,000 miles from home and in terrible conditions. Nearly 1,000 people lost their lives during the 74 day conflict but the War was brought to an end on 14th June, with the surrender of Argentina and the announcement of Britain as the victor.
This commemorative coin was originally issued in Uncirculated Cupro Nickel, Proof Sterling Silver and Proof 22ct Gold.
