Description

The Isle of Man TT Races is the most famous motorcycle racing event in the world, attracting thousands of enthusiasts all wishing to participate in the unique atmosphere, whilst competitors pit their machines against each other on the famous ‘mountain’ circuit.  To celebrate this amazing race the Isle of Man Government has approved the release of two new outstanding proof sterling silver collector's coins from Pobjoy Mint portraying famous riders from this exciting sport.

This coin in this exceptional set illustrates Renzo Pasolini pushing himself and his motor cycle to the limits in an Isle of Man TT race.  The other coin in the series depicts Agostini’s leap on the 350cc MV Agusta at the TT races in 1971.  Both coins show the TT Logo and the Isle of Man Triskeles with a laurel wreath in the surround and the value at the base.

Approved by Buckingham Palace the obverse of each coin carries a fine effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS FSNAD.  These beautiful collector's coins are available in uncirculated cupro nickel and proof sterling silver.

The Tourist Trophy Motor Cycle Race has been a motorcycle event on the Isle of Man since 1907.  The event originated when the Road Traffic Act of 1903 imposed a speed limit of 20 mph in Britain.  When the British Government was asked to close public roads for racing, the proposal was defeated.  The Isle of Man, with its own Government and laws had no such problem and ran first the highly successful Bennett Cup car races, followed later by an event for motorcycles.

The theme for this year’s TT Classic Nostalgia Weekend is Italian Motorcycles and Riders at the TT to celebrate the famous links between Italy and the Isle of Man which stretch from the early days of 1926 with Pietro Ghersi.

Some of the celebrations include 70 years since Stanley Woods took the 350cc and 500cc classes on Moto Guzzi and 55 years since Dario Ambrosini won the 250cc Lightweight on the Benelli.  It is 50 years since Geoff Duke won the Senior on Gilera, Bill Lomas won the Junior on Guzzi and the Lightweight on MV with Carlo Ubbiali doing the same in the 125cc race. It is also 40 years since Giacomo Agostini and Renzo Pasolini first rode in the TT and 35 years since Agostini won both the Junior and Senior TTs for MV.

These IOM coins were originally issued in Uncirculated Cupro Nickel, Proof Sterling Silver and 1/5 oz Fine 999.9 Gold, with each precious metal coin struck four times to achieve the lustrous Pobjoy proof finish.
