Since the release of the first coin in 1988, the Isle of Man Manx Cat series has become one of the most popular coin series in the world. Each collector's coin from Pobjoy Mint has depicted a cat or kitten and 2011 sees the issue of another wonderful coin, this time depicting an image of two Turkish Angora cats.
The design on this Fine Silver coin depicts two Turkish Angora cats, one sitting and the other one lying down. Approved by Buckingham Palace, the obverse bears a fine effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, by Ian Rank Broadley FRBS.
The IOM coins are available in Cupro Nickel and Proof Fine 999. Silver. For the seventh year running the Silver and the Cupro Nickel versions are available as stunning coloured coins with the Cupro Nickel coins in a lovely presentation pack.
The Turkish Angora cat is an old breed and named after the Turkish Capital of Angora (now known as Ankara). Apparently, Louis XV, Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were all fans of the Turkish Angora breed. When first introduced to England and France in the 1700s, they became a status symbol with only the wealthy being able to afford to own one.
The breed was introduced to North America in the 1800s and became popular very quickly. The Turkish Angora cat is medium in size, with long hair, slender build and delicate features. They have distinctive pert ears and lovely eyes, often either blue or odd coloured.
Turkish Angoras are very affectionate and require a lot of attention - once attached to a family they are devoted to their human companions. They are a very active breed and love to climb and play – when in movement they have the grace of a dancer. Although famously white in colour, you can get blue, red, tabby and bi-colour patterns on their silky long coat.
