Pobjoy Mint is pleased to announce the release of two new proof sterling silver collector's coins on behalf of the Isle of Man Government which commemorates the Centenary of the RMS Titanic.
To commemorate the Centenary of this tragedy, this coin shows shows passengers boarding the Titanic. The other coin in the series shows the Titanic sailing with the iceberg in the foreground.
One hundred years ago in 1912, one of the most famous ships in history left Southampton, England on her maiden voyage heading for New York in the USA. Named Titanic because she was the largest passenger vessel in history, the ‘unsinkable’ ship was the epitome of luxury and one of the marvels of the modern world. But in the early darkness of 15th April 1912, Titanic struck an iceberg in the Atlantic Ocean and was lost resulting in the deaths of 1,517 people in one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in history.
Designed by experienced engineers, utilising the most advanced technologies and safety features of the time, the sinking of a passenger liner on her maiden voyage, the high number of people lost, the resulting changes of laws and the discovery of the wreck have all contributed to the enduring interest in Titanic. With its seafaring background and the fact that Charles Joughin, a Manxman, was a baker on the Titanic, this is an ideal coin issue from the Isle of Man.
Available in Cupro Nickel and Proof Sterling Silver, each IOM commemorative coin features a unique Double Effigy showing a portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II as she appears on current coins, along with a portrait of The Queen based on how she appeared on the first coins of her reign which has been produced to celebrate Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee Year. Each precious metal coin is struck four times to produce the famous Pobjoy proof finish.
