Description

On 2nd June 1953, 27 million people in the United Kingdom and millions more audiences around the world watched the first ever televised Coronation of a Monarch when Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was crowned.  Having watched her father’s Coronation in 1937, the 11 year old Princess Elizabeth then had no clue that her own official Coronation would take place only 16 years later.  Attended by 8,251 guests, 129 nations and territories were officially represented at the service.  There were more than 2,000 journalists and 500 photographers from 92 nations joining the members of the public lining the Coronation route.  Among the many foreign journalists was Jacqueline Bouvier representing the Washington Times-Herald who would later become the First Lady of the United States of America, Jackie Kennedy.

The Great Seal of the Realm is used to symbolise the Sovereign’s approval of important state documents.  Sealing wax is melted in a metal mould and impressed into a piece of warm wax that is attached to documents that the Monarch wishes to make official.  The design is an amalgamation of the Great Seals of His Majesty King George VI and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.  The image of King George VI is shown in silhouette to symbolically represent Her Majesty being crowned Queen in place of her father.

The obverse of the coin features an effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II produced exclusively by Pobjoy Mint.
