Pobjoy Mint is pleased to announce the release of a beautiful 2019 set of coins on behalf of South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands which marks the Bi-Centenary of the Birth of Queen Victoria.

It is therefore particularly apt that to mark this anniversary the two coins from South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands feature images from Queen Victoria’s Great Seal. The first coin shows the reverse of the Great Seal of Queen Victoria.  This particularly intricate design shows the Queen seated on a throne with the symbolic figures of Justice and Religion seated on either side. The Royal Arms and crown are shown below wreathed with oaks and roses. The second coin in the set shows the obverse of the seal with Queen Victoria riding on horseback, crowned and holding a sceptre.  A page is shown alongside who is holding the horse’s reins.

The obverse of the coin features an effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II produced exclusively by Pobjoy Mint.

Born on 24th May 1819 at Kensington Palace, Victoria was christened ‘Alexandrina Victoria’ but from birth was formally addressed as Her Royal Highness Princess Victoria of Kent.  Victoria’s first language was German but at the young age of three years she learnt to speak English and French.  She became Queen Victoria at 18 years of age and was Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from 20th June 1837 until her death on 22nd January 1901.  Her reign of 63 years, seven months and two days was longer than that of any of her predecessors.  The Victoria Era was a period of great change in Britain, with the Empire expanding to the largest that had ever existing, ruling a quarter of the world’s population.

During the 19th Century, the continuous British ownership and Government for South Georgia was provided for by the British Letters Patent of 1843. Letters Patent are a legal document issued by a Monarch which allow for the creation of officers of the government and are issued for the appointment of representatives of the Crown.  Letters Patent issued by a Monarch are made official with the inclusion of the Great Seal of the Realm which is created when sealing wax is melted into a metal mould and impressed into a wax disc that is attached to a cord or ribbon to documents that the Monarch wishes to make official.  As the British Letters Patent were issued during Queen Victoria’s reign, they would have been endorsed by her Great Seal.
