Pobjoy Mint announced the release of two superb collector's coins celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the Start of the Trans-Antarctic Expedition, also known as the Endurance Expedition. To commemorate this Expedition, this beautiful uncirculated cupro nickel coin, issued on behalf of the South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands, depicts the Endurance at Grytviken with an inset cameo of Sir Ernest Shackleton.
The Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, is considered the last major expedition of the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. Conceived by Sir Ernest Shackleton, the Expedition was an attempt to make the first land crossing of the Antarctic continent. Shackleton proposed to sail in his ship Endurance to the Weddell Sea and to land a shore party near Vahsel Bay, in preparation for a transcontinental march through the South Pole to the Ross Sea.
This commemorative coin is available in both Uncirculated Cupro Nickel and Proof Sterling Silver and bear an obverse of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS. Each beautiful precious metal coin has been struck four times to produce the superlative Pobjoy Proof Finish.
A century ago, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his crew on the SS Endurance began the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition which became one of the greatest adventures of modern times. The plan to make the first land crossing from what is now the British Antarctic Territory across the Antarctic continent was so daring it remains a symbol of the Heroic Age of Antarctic exploration. To commemorate the Centenary of the start of the expedition, the British Antarctic Territory are honouring the expedition showing the SS Endurance departing British Waters with a cameo inset of Shackleton.
Having set sail in 1914, making 2014 the Centenary of the start of the Expedition, Endurance became beset in the ice of the Weddell Sea and, despite efforts to free it, drifted northward and held in the pack ice throughout the Antarctic winter of 1915. Eventually the ship was crushed and sank, stranding the crew on the ice. After months spent in makeshift camps, the party used lifeboats to reach the uninhabited Elephant Island. Shackleton and five others then made an 800 mile open boat journey to South Georgia and from there was able to mount a rescue of the remaining men on Elephant Island and bring them home without loss of life.
This magnificent coin series also includes a second coin, issued on behalf of the British Antarctic Territory, which shows the SS Endurance departing British waters and also includes a cameo of Sir Ernest Shackleton.
