Following the tradition of depicting indigenous local wildlife, Pobjoy Mint is delighted to announce the release of a stunning new uncirculated cupro nickel collector's coin issued on behalf of South Georgia & South Sandwich Islands which features the amazing Humpback Whale.

Found in oceans and seas around the world, the humpback whale is a species of baleen whale and is one of the larger of the whale family, ranging from 39-52 feet in length and weighing around 36,000 kilograms. Humpbacks are the acrobats of the oceans and are known for breaching and slapping the water, althoug the reason behind these manoeurvers is unknown. They are the noisest and most imaginative whales when it comes to song, using long, varied, complex, eerie and beautiful sounds stretching across the widest range of frequencies used by whales.

Humpbacks travel in large groups and, when hunting, cooperate by blowing a wall of bubbles as they swim to the surface in a spiral path forcing their prey of krill, plankton and small fish to the surface of the water (known as bubble-net feeding) which ensures they whole pod each a large meal.
