James Cook was born on 27th October 1728 in Marton, England, and to commemorate the 275th Anniversary of the birth of one of the most famous explorers and navigators, the Government of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands has approved the release of a superb coin which features Captain Cook and his voyages of discovery.
Following his education, at the age of 18, Cook soon found work on the Baltic Sea in a coal transport ship but during the war with the French in 1775 he enlisted as an Able Seaman on the Eagle. Cook advanced through the ranks very quickly and was given command of his own survey vessel. His first mission was to map the estuary of the St Lawrence River before the naval assault on Quebec and later surveyed the coast of Newfoundland. Cook’s charts were so accurate and complete that they were still in use until the beginning of the 20th Century.
This superb coin carries a portrait of Captain Cook himself with his ship, The Resolution, in the foreground. A map of Antarctica is also shown. The obverse of the coin carries a fine effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS FSNADShow more
In 1770 in the Endeavour, he claimed both New Zealand and Australia as British Possessions and in July 1772, Cook left England on another commission to confirm the existence of a Great Southern Continent. He was given two ships, The Resolution and The Adventure. Cook ensured these ships were stocked with the necessary provision to put his new dietary reforms in place to prevent the loss of life they suffered on his first voyage. The ships left Plymouth and sailed around the Cape of Good Horn into the Antarctic Ocean where he took possession of South Georgia. Captain Cook was tragically killed by local natives in Hawaii on 14th February 1779 and will always be one of the most famous explorers of British history.
