In 1999, the Bank of Sierra Leone is commemorating two famous explorer's anniversaries: The 400th anniversary of the first voyage of the Italian navigator Amerigo Vespucci, and the 140th Anniversary of the publishing of the book, "On the Origin of Species" by the anthropologist Charles Darwin.
The reverse of the Vespucci coin features a portrait of Amerigo Vespucci, to the right is an image of one of his recantations, creatures of the deep who are mermaid-like in appearance. To the left is a typical sailing vessel that would have transported him as he explored the unknown.
