One of the greatest operations of the Second World War was Operation Overlord. Taking place on 6th June 1944, the Allied invasion of German-occupied Europe dealt a blow to the Nazis and has gone down in history as one of the most brilliant military manoeuvres ever executed. To commemorate D-Day, as this day is now known, the Isle of Man Government has approved the release of this stunning new coloured Uncirculated Cupro Nickel crown by Pobjoy Mint.
The design on this incredible collector’s coin depicts Allied Troops storming a bunker on D-Day with signs naming the five landing beaches, and a large ‘D’ representing D-Day. The design also incorporates several poppies, recognised world-wide as the symbol for those who gave their lives for their country. Available in both Proof Sterling Silver and Uncirculated Cupro Nickel, all coins have been produced to the highest quality and the precious metal coins have been struck four times to produce the famous Pobjoy Proof finish. As an Act of Remembrance for the 70th Anniversary, this special edition coin’s design includes the poppies coloured red.Show more
The obverse of the coin carries an effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Lord of Mann, by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS. Ian Rank-Broadley is one of the foremost sculptors working today. His effigy of H.M. Queen Elizabeth II has appeared on all UK coinage since 1998 and the Pobjoy Mint has exclusive use of the ‘uncouped’ effigy that appears on the obverse of these collector’s coins.
We will remember them
During the first week in June, the greatest Armada ever known assembled along the South coast of England to prepare for the assault on Hitler’s forces in Europe. 12,000 planes of the Allied Air Forces cleared the Luftwaffe from the skies and photographed enemy defences whilst the Allied Naval Forces patrolled the English Channel. On D-Day itself, more than 1,000 transports dropped paratroopers to secure the beaches. Amphibious craft landed over 130,000 troops on five beaches along the Normandy coast – the British and Canadian forces landed on Gold, Juno and Sword Beaches whilst American troops landed on Utah and Omaha Beaches. This incredible act of bravery by so many was the turning point of World War II as Nazi forces were overcome and defences regained.
This remarkable IOM commemorative coin, celebrating the 70th Anniversary of D-Day, brings this key moment in history to life like never before. A limited edition, this coloured Uncirculated Cupro Nickel collector’s coin comes in a stunning presentation pouch.
