The obverse of the coin carries an effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS. Ian Rank-Broadley is one of the foremost sculptors working today. His effigy of H.M. Queen Elizabeth II has appeared on all UK coinage since 1998 and the Pobjoy Mint has exclusive use of the ‘uncouped’ effigy that appears on the obverse of these collector’s coins.
Featuring the adorable Weddell Seal Pup
The Weddell Seal is native to Antarctica and lives further south than any other mammal. Discovered and named in the 1820s during expeditions led by James Weddell, the British sealing captain, this seal is remarkable for its ability to survive the bitter Antarctic winters. During this season they spend most of the time in the water to avoid the blizzards and can be spotted with only their heads poking through breathing holes in the ice. This practice also helps them avoid their main predators, orcas and leopard seals.
Weddell seals can dive down to 2,000 feet (610) meters and can remain underwater for up to 45 minutes. However, like all marine mammals they must surface to breathe and if natural openings are not available, these industrious seals use their teeth to open and maintain ice holes.
Seal pups are normally born in September or October and are silver or golden as young before taking on the adult grey colours. By two weeks of ages they are more than able to swim, and as very vocal animals both pups and adults can make themselves heard to other seals far below the ice when necessary.
As with the other Pobjoy Mint coins, the Uncirculated Cupro Nickel edition comes in a unique presentation pouch, perfect for safekeeping.
