What is Virenium®?

Virenium® is a complex alloy and metallic laminate of nickel, copper and zinc. It has a gold-like hue with high lustre and permanent magnetic properties. It has been perfected with inherent fraud-proof properties rendering it virtually impossible to counterfeit

In 1978, Pobjoy Mint developed the world's first satisfactory man-made precious metal, called Virenium®. This new wonder alloy was specially developed for the circulation edition of the First 'Round Pound' coin on behalf of the Isle of Man and has been successfully used in high denomination coinage ever since.

2023:

African Animal Mask Series - 2023 Virenium® 1 Dollar Coin - SLE - 2023 started off with a bang as Pobjoy announced the release of the first coin in the stunning new series, ‘African Animal Masks’. The first coin in this collection features the Elephant and is Issued on behalf of Sierra Leone. This new series has been produced in magnificent Virenium® with a low issue limit of only 950 per coin. All coins are available with a Pobjoy Mint special Collector’s Album to house the complete collection.

This brand new 2023 series will feature the following African Animals: Elephant, Rhino, Lion, Leopard, Buffalo and Meerkat. The obverse of all coins will bear the Coat of Arms of Sierra Leone. 

2022:

British Virgin Islands Ships - 2022 Virenium® 1 Dollar Coin - BVI - After the incredible reaction to our 2020 and 2021 Tall Ships series, we were thrilled to announce the release of a brand new 6 coin series featuring ships connected to the British Virgin Islands. All coins within this stunning series have been produced in magnificent Virenium® with an issue limit of 1,950 per coin and are available to purchase with a Pobjoy Mint special Collector’s Album to house the complete collection.

This 2022 series features the following BVI Ships: Golden Hind, Santa Maria, HMS Astrea, HMS Rhone, HMS Nymph and HMS Formidable. The obverse of all six coins features an effigy of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II produced exclusively by Pobjoy Mint. 

2019:

Flamingos Series- 2019 Coloured Virenium® 1 Dollar Coin - BVI - 2019 marked the year Pobjoy Mint announced the release of the first series to feature the spectacular bird, the Flamingo, on behalf of the British Virgin Islands. The word ‘flamingo’ comes from the Portuguese/Spanish ‘flamengo’ meaning ‘flame-coloured’ which is particularly apt for this series as all 6 coins feature a Flamingo in their vibrent colours! All coins within this stunning series have been produced in magnificent Virenium® With an issue limit of 3,500 per coin and are available to purchase with a Pobjoy Mint special Collector’s Album to house the complete collection. 

This 2019 series features the following Flamingos: American, James', Chilean, Greater, Andean and Lesser. The obverse of all six coins features an effigy of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II produced exclusively by Pobjoy Mint.

Centenary of The Discovery of Tutankhamun's Tomb Set - 2022 Virenium® Complete 3 Coin Set - SLE

This phenomenal three coin set has been issued on behalf of Sierra Leone to commemorate the Centenary of the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb. All coins within this stunning set have been produced in magnificent Virenium® With an issue limit of 999 each and presented in three beautifiully designed presentation packs. This 2022 set features the following designs: Death Mask, Conffinette, Throne. The obverse of all 3 coins bear the Coat of Arms of Sierra Leone.
