Pobjoy Mint announced a fabulous issue on behalf of the
This is the second commemorative coin for the British Antarctic Territory, with 2008 seeing the release of the first Antarctic coin, this Anniversary coin is sure to follow in its footsteps and become just as popular. The design of this coin is very fitting to the underlying aim of the Treaty. The background features a map of the Antarctic which is surrounded by beautifully detailed images of the marine life that inhabit the area and which the Antarctic Treaty System aims to preserve.
The Albatross is considered by many to be one of the most magnificent Antarctic and Southern Ocean birds. Their physical characteristics enable Albatrosses to be great gliders; in particular they have long modified wings to maximize the updrafts and air columns over the open ocean.
The Blue Whale is the largest animal known to man and can be found in all the worlds oceans. They migrate with the changing weather, so in the summer you can expect to find them cooling down in the polar ice caps and warming up in the winter by moving to tropical and subtropical waters.
The Emperor Penguin is one of the world’s most adorable creatures. It is featured on the coin with its ‘chick’ or ‘young’ and is bending down as if to feed it. These flightless birds are the largest of all penguins and are the only species that breed and incubate during the winter season. They manage to stay warm in -80° F Antarctic conditions largely due to their dense network of feathers around 70 feathers per square inch.
Elephant Seals are the biggest of the Antarctic seals and are aptly named because of their size. Once thought to be a dying species because of the exploitation in the 19th and 20th centuries for their oil, sightings of these easily identifiable seals are very common; ‘beach party’ scenes are also observed, where a large number of Elephant Seals can be spotted lazing around ‘sunbathing’ in muddy puddles.
Available in Unc. Cupro Nickel and Proof Sterling Silver, with the Silver coins being carefully struck four times to produce a glorious mirror-finish background, the design is sculpted in striking relief.
