British Virgin Islands 2004 - Battle of Trafalgar Nelsons Favourite Ships - Unc. Cupro Nickel

To celebrate the bicentenary of the Battle of Trafalgar and commemorate the death of the British Naval Hero Horatio Nelson the British Virgin Islands Government has approved the release of this stunning five-coin collection.

The Battle of Trafalgar took place off the coast of Spain in 1805.  Nelson secured victory for the English with an innovative battle plan, which involved the fleet splitting into two columns, (Nelson at the head of one in the ‘Victory’ and Collingwood leading the other in the ‘Royal Sovereign’,) to attack the French Navy from different angles.  During the course of the battle Nelson was fatally wounded whilst on deck but he lived to hear the news that the English Navy had succeeded in its quest for glory against Napoléon.

In this superb collection, each coin shows a wonderfully detailed image of a scene from Nelson’s life. The design on this coin shows Nelson’s favourite ships, ‘Agamemnon’, ‘Vanguard’, ‘Elephant’, ‘Captain’ and ‘Victory’.  His order of the Bath is also shown.
