Following the popularity of previous Titanium coins, Pobjoy Mint is pleased to announce the release of a new Titanium coin for 2014 on behalf of the British Virgin Islands (BVI).
This unique collector’s coin, struck in turquoise titanium, features a beautiful seahorse with its tail entwined around coral.
Due to the difficulty of striking titanium, the metal is as strong as steel but 45% lighter, each coin in this series is truly exclusive as no two titanium coins are exactly the same. Each coin also features a lined effect that is present as a result of the unmistakeable qualities of titanium. Titanium is renowned for its excellent resistance to seawater and is used in the manufacture of propeller shafts, rigging and other areas of ships that are exposed to seawater, adding another exceptional link to this special coin with its association to the sea and marine life.
The choice of the seahorse reflects the British Virgin Islands marine heritage. The British Virgin Islands, located in the Caribbean and comprising of 60+ islands, are famed for their coral reefs featuring a wide variety of animal species including the seahorse. Seahorse is the title given to 54 species of marine fish in the genus Hippocampus which comes from the Ancient Greek hippos meaning ‘horse’ and kampos meaning ‘sea monster’.Show more
Seahorses range in size from 1.5cm to 35.5cm and are named for their equine appearance, swimming upright unlike other fish. They have a flexible, well-defined neck and a coronet on the head which is distinctive to each individual. The seahorse feeds on small crustaceans and can ambush prey that float within striking range. Seahorses are found in shallow tropical and mild waters throughout the world, living in sheltered areas such as seagrass beds, estuaries and coral reefs.
The obverse of the coin features an effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS.
The coin is also available in Uncirculated Cupro Nickel and Proof Sterling Silver.
