Celebrating International Polar Year: Ernest Shackleton - 2007 Uncirculated Cupro Nickel

On three occasions over the past 125 years, scientists from around the world have joined forces for a massive research project focused on the Arctic and Antarctic. March 2007 sees the start of the fourth such International Polar Year and to celebrate Pobjoy Mint has produced this stunning ommemorative coin from South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands.

The new coin features Sir Ernest Shackleton. This celebrated polar explorer has strong links with South Georgia. He first arrived in the region after being shipwrecked (his ship, Endurance, was crushed in ice) while on a trans-Antarctic expedition. His book, South, is a record of that particular trip.
