Isle of Man 2014 - Centenary of World War I: Christmas Day 1914 - Uncirculated Cupro Nickel Coin

Available in Uncirculated Cupro Nickel and Proof Sterling Silver, each precious metal coin has been carefully struck four times to create the famous Pobjoy Proof finish and features frosted high relief sculpting against a mirror brilliant background.  As an Act of Remembrance for this Centenary, the coin is also available in a special edition with the poppy produced in full colour.

The obverse of the coin carries an effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Lord of Mann, by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS. Ian Rank-Broadley is one of the foremost sculptors working today. His effigy of H.M. Queen Elizabeth II has appeared on all UK coinage since 1998 and the Pobjoy Mint has exclusive use of the ‘uncouped’ effigy that appears on the obverse of these collector’s coins.

We will remember them

In June 1914, a Serbian nationalist assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria in Sarajevo.  An intensification of threats and deployment orders followed the incident which led to the outbreak of World War I.  By the time World War I ended, more than 9 million soldiers had been killed and 21 million wounded.
