Available in both Proof Sterling Silver and Uncirculated Cupro Nickel, each coin has been finished to the high standards that distinguish a Pobjoy Mint coin. Each detailed to perfection, the precious metal versions have been struck four times to attain the famous Pobjoy Proof finish.
The obverse of the coin carries an effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS. Ian Rank-Broadley is one of the foremost sculptors working today. His effigy of H.M. Queen Elizabeth II has appeared on all UK coinage since 1998 and the Pobjoy Mint has exclusive use of the ‘uncouped’ effigy that appears on the obverse of these coins.
The walk of the Penguins
The Emperor Penguin is the tallest and heaviest of all living penguin species and is found exclusively in Antarctica. Best known for the journeys the adults make at the beginning of each Antarctic Winter, March and April sees mature Emperor Penguins travel to nesting areas, often walking 50-120km (31-75 miles) inland in temperatures as low as -40°C (-40°F).
The female penguin lays one egg in May or early June and this is then carefully transferred to the male who looks after the egg until it is hatched. The female Emperor Penguin returns any time after hatching up until 10 days afterwards and manages to find her mate amongst the hundreds of fathers by his call. She then takes over caring for the chick enabling the males to head for the sea to feed before returning 24 days later. This beautiful coin clearly details two tiny Emperor Penguin chicks with an adult Penguin in the background, perfectly recreating life in this amazing Territory.
As with the other Pobjoy Mint coins, the Uncirculated Cupro Nickel edition comes in a unique presentation pouch for safekeeping.
