Falkland Islands 2007 - Anniversary of the Fisheries Conservation Zone - Cupro Nickel Coin

In 1987 a Fisheries Conservation Zone was introduced around the Falkland Islands and to commemorate the 20th Anniversary in February of this year, the Falkland Islands Government has approved the release of a special uncirculated cupro nickel collector's coin from Pobjoy Mint.

There are two species of squid in the fishery: the Illex argentinus which is the biggest in terms of volume, value and also size of the squid.  Typical annual catches are around 150,000 tonnes with much of the catch destined for the Far East although significant amounts also go to Europe; the Loligo gahi are caught by large stern trawlers almost all of which are registered in the Falklands.  These squid are frozen on board and produce a delicious product.  The design on the coin features a single squid.

Approved by Buckingham Palace the obverse of each commemorative coin carries a fine effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS FSNAD and is available in Cupro Nickel and Proof Sterling Silver with each precious metal coin being struck four times to achieve the lustrous Pobjoy proof finish.
