On May 25, 1961, Kennedy addressed a joint session of Congress to announce his decision to go to the moon. Eight years later in July of 1969, the mission was accomplished and the United States had officialy won the race to space. To carry out Apollo 11, NASA was authorized to greatly increase their budget and in turn, went on their way to eventually become the large engineering organization centered on developing capabilities for human space flight.
It is fair to say that landing the first man on the moon would not have been possible without the influence of John F. Kennedy and today he is recognized for that along with many other great accomplishments throughout his Presidency. In addition. he is well known for his service in the U.S. Navy and for all of the awards he earned - including the Purple Heart Medal.
