Greatest Britons: Churchill - 2007 Unc. Cupro Nickel Crown Coin - FAL

In 2005 more than half a million Britons cast their votes to decide who was the greatest Briton of all time.

Last year Pobjoy Mint honoured two of the revered figures from the final top thirty, Admiral Nelson (number nine) and Isambard Kingdom Brunel (number two), with coin releases, The coins were produced on behalf of the Falkland Islands, the overseas territory of Britain, which has strong links with both these two figures. Brunel was the engineer responsible for the ship the SS Great Britain which, after running aground in the Falklands, was used as storage for coal and replenished the battle cruisers, which helped win the Battle of the Falkland Islands on 8 December 1914 during the First World War. Nelson very nearly made the Falklands the location of his first sea battle when, at the age of 12, in 1770, he was due to sail with his captain uncle to defend the islands against the Spanish. But the conflict blew over.

Now, by popular demand, Pobjoy Mint is proud to unveil another four coins in the Greatest Britons series from the Falkland Islands. This stunning set of coins wouldn’t be complete without a tribute to the person voted the Greatest Briton of all time.  Sixty years after he led Britain through the Second World War, Winston Churchill came out top and his beautifully crafted coin brings the total in this two-year set from the Falkland Islands to six.
