Isle of Man 2000 - 60th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain - 1 Crown Cupro Nickel Coin

To mark the 60th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain, Pobjoy Mint has release a commemorative crown on behalf of the Isle of Man Government. The Battle of Britain is the name given to the Second World War air campaign instigated by the German Air Force (Luftwaffe) against the United Kingdom during 1940. 

This IOM collector's coin itself features two British Spitfires engaged in a dog fight with a German Messerschmitt ME109 that is on fire. Above a squadron of German Heinkel HE 111 bombers are flying in tight formation, while the beams of the British anti aircraft searchlights search the night sky for German aircraft. The coin also ilustrates British Barrage Balloons which were a form of defence into which enemy aircraft would fly and crash.

The obverse of the coin carries a fine effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, Lord of Mann, by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS. Available in Cupro Nickel and Proof Sterling Silver, each beautifully engineered precious metal coin has been struck four times to produce the superlative Pobjoy proof finish.
