The obverse of this commemorative coin carries an effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Lord of Mann, by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS. Ian Rank-Broadley is one of the foremost sculptors working today. His effigy of H.M. Queen Elizabeth II has appeared on all UK coinage since 1998 and the Pobjoy Mint has exclusive use of the ‘uncouped’ effigy that appears on the obverse of these collector’s coins.

A man personifying adventure is celebrated

Born in March 1774, Captain Flinders made three voyages to the southern ocean and it was during his second voyage that Van Diemen’s Land, now Tasmania, was confirmed as an island.  Following this voyage his work came to the attention of Sir Joseph Banks and as a result, in January 1801, Flinders was given command of the Investigator and promoted to Commander the following month.

Aboard the Investigator, Flinders started his exploration of the Australian coastline drawing up his maps as he went.  After his return to England, Flinder’s map of Terra Australia was first published in January 1814.  Revered in Australia and acknowledged as one of the greatest navigators in history, he died in 1814 aged 40, the day after his book and atlas was published.

A unique tribute to both English and Australian history this IOM commemorative Uncirculated Cupro Nickel coin is a limited edition collector’s coin and comes in a stunning presentation pouch.
