These two stunning proof fine gold collector's coins, available individually or as a set, each have a special inset. This first coin depicts Queen Elizabeth I standing between two pillars, and dressed in the Coronation Robe. In her left hand is the Sovereign's Orb, which is a hollow sphere with a band of jewels running along the centre, and a jeweled Cross positioned on the top representing the Sovereign's role as Defender of the Faith. The Queen holds a scepter in her right hand and there is also a 0.01ct ruby inset into the coin.
The second commemorative coin depicts a design taken from a Gold Ryal (1583-1585), which shows Queen Elizabeth I aboard a ship. In the surround of the coin design is the wording ‘Queen Elizabeth I’.
Approved by Buckingham Palace the obverse of each coin carries a fine effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS FSNAD and was also issued in Cupro Nickel and Proof Sterling Silver. The coins are available in 1/5oz Proof Fine 999.9 Gold and the Coronation design will have a 0.01ct ruby inset into the coin and the Ryal design will have a 1.0mm pearl inset into the coin.
Queen Elizabeth I, born on the 17th November, 1558 was the second child to King Henry VIII and first child to Anne Boleyn to survive infancy. She was heir presumptive when she was born. Her older half-sister Mary had lost her position as legitimate heir when Henry divorced her mother, Catherine of Aragon, in order to marry Anne. After Anne failed to provide Henry with his much wanted male heir, to continue the Tudor dynasty, he had Anne arrested and locked away until he beheaded her in 1536.
Elizabeth was just 2 years old when this happened and declared from then on illegitimate and deprived of the title Princess. Despite this Elizabeth went on to lead a comfortable life with an excellent education and was considered the best educated woman of her generation.
Elizabeth was just 13 when her father, King Henry VIII died. Her younger half-brother Edward VI became King until the day he died in 1553, aged just 15. His will stated that the crown was to go to Lady Jane Grey but her support quickly fell apart and she was overthrown two weeks later which meant that Mary was crowned Queen of England.
Mary’s bond with her sister Elizabeth was strained, Mary had Elizabeth arrested and interrogated at the Tower of London and even held her under house arrest at Hatfield House, which is where she was told of her sister’s death. Elizabeth succeeded to the throne on the day that Mary died at St. James Palace on 17th November 1558 at the age of 25.
