Description

In 2006 released an outstanding series of coins on behalf of the Government of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands depicting native wildlife of the Sub-Antarctic.

The Antarctic is a severe environment for any creature to survive in, yet both marine and terrestrial habitats of the Antarctic, contain wildlife which has adapted to the extreme conditions and which effectively utilise available resources.

This delightful coin depicts on of the best loved inhabitants - The Rockhopper Penguin! Rockhoppers are the smallest (18 to 23 inches - 45 to 58 centimetres) of the Crested family of penguins and get their name because they hop over rocks and crevices on the shore.  It is estimated that there are over 3 million breeding pairs, although they are rare in South Georgia.

The coin has the name of the species in the surround and the value at the base.  The obverse of the coin carries a fine effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS FSNAD.
