To commemorate the 400th Anniversary of the establishment of the House of Romanov (1613 – 1917), the second and last imperial dynasty to rule over the vast expanses of the Russian Empire, Pobjoy Mint has released a set of four stunning coins on behalf of the British Virgin Islands (BVI).
Each coin has been issued showing a portrait of a different member of the Romanov Dynasty - Peter the Great, Catherine the Great, Alexander I and Nicholas II - with a building associated with that particular ruler. Beneath the design is the Russian Eagle which contains the value and the dates for each member of this awe-inspiring Dynasty. These four coins are available individually or as part of a unique collector’s set.Show more
This coloured Uncirculated Cupro Nickel coin, honouring Peter the Great, carries his portrait and an image of the Peter and Paul Cathedral, located in St Petersburg and built during his reign. Peter the Great ruled the Tsardom of Russia and later the Russian Empire from 1682 until 1725. In many successful wars he expanded the Tsardom into a huge empire that became a major European power. In 1703 Peter gave the order to start building the Peter and Paul Fortress. The fortress was destined to turn into the second “northern” capital of Russia, - the great city of Saint Petersburg. It was declared the capital of the country in 1712 and remained so until the beginning of the twentieth century.
Each commemorative coin is issued in Uncirculated Cupro Nickel, coloured Uncirculated Cupro Nickel, coloured Proof Sterling Silver and Proof Sterling Silver, and each precious metal coin has been carefully struck four times to create the famous Pobjoy Proof finish with the coin featuring frosted high relief sculpting against a mirror brilliant background.
The 400th Anniversary of the Romanov Dynasty
Descendants of Andrey Ivanovich Kobyla, the Romanovs acquired their name from Roman Yurev, whose daughter Anastasiya Romanovna Zakharina-Yureva was the first wife of Ivan IV the Terrible. Her brother Nikita’s children took the surname Romanov in honour of their grandfather, father of a Tsarina, thus creating a dynasty that struck wonder and fear into the heart of its nation for years to come.
The obverse of these wonderful coins carries an effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS. Ian Rank-Broadley is one of the foremost sculptors working today. His effigy of H.M. Queen Elizabeth II has appeared on all UK coinage since 1998 and the Pobjoy Mint has exclusive use of the ‘uncouped’ effigy that appears on the obverse of these coins.
