The Bank of Sierra Leone has approved the release of two coins featuring a Lion and a Unicorn, in acknowledgement of the return of Hong Kong to Chinese rule. The Lion is symbolic not only to the United Kingdom, but also to Hong Kong and Sierra Leone at it is depicted on all three Coat of Arms.
The first coin depicts a crowned rampant Lion, facing right with one foot firmly on the ground. It is surrounded by a wreath with the word ‘Lion’ to the right.
The obverse of the coin depicts the Coat of Arms of Sierra Leone, with two lions supporting a shield and a motto underneath reading ‘Unity, Freedom, Justice’. The name Sierra Leone stands for the Lion Coast.
