South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands 2014 - The Spectacled Porpoise - Cupro Nickel Coin

The obverse of this commemorative coin carries an effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS. Ian Rank-Broadley is one of the foremost sculptors working today. His effigy of H.M. Queen Elizabeth II has appeared on all UK coinage since 1998 and the Pobjoy Mint has exclusive use of the ‘uncouped’ effigy that appears on the obverse of these collector’s coins.

A rare animal in today’s world

Nowadays it is unusual that so little is known about such a large animal. Rarely seen, the Spectacled Porpoise is believed to be found around the cool sub-Antarctic waters and has been sighted off South Georgia in the Atlantic.  With distinctive black and white markings – black above and white underneath – and a white stripe on the upper surface of the tail, the Spectacled Porpoise is a fast, active swimmer which normally avoids boats.  The total population is unknown leading to the species being listed as a Threatened Species.
